So, there I was, watching the Calgary Flames play the Vancouver Canucks in a pre-season game in Calgary. Paulette and I had settled into our free seats with a beer each. I’m a stickler for watching the puck drop, so we were going to wait for food until after the first period. As it was a pre-season game, the intensity on the ice wasn’t exactly cranked and I found my mind wandering from the play to the atmosphere around me.

One thing I found particularly interesting was how the sound of the arena was cultivated to create a specific mood – everything from cheering to music to sound clips to the sound of the ice to sound of play. It all came together to present something carefully crafted. That’s when I started to notice strange things, like what music was being played and what sound clips. I started to think about what I was not hearing, or maybe even where I was not hearing it. For example, The Launch by DJ Jean – a very popular clip to keep fans excited, but probably a lot more at home in a trendy Dance Club; a place where I would imagine that ~75% of the hockey fans who were wildly cheering the song on would never set foot in, let alone dance to.
